Our Beginning...1967

In 1967, Avondale First Baptist Church and Glenwood Hills Baptist Church felt God's need for a Southern Baptist Church in a quickly expanding area of south DeKalb County. With $19,000 willed to the Atlanta Association for the purpose of starting a new church in this area and financial support from the two churches, the Joint Mission Committee purchased 19 acres of land on Flat Shoals Road. Joe M. Hughes was called as pastor of the mission.

On July 2, 1967, the Flat Shoals Baptist Mission met for the first time at Panthersville Masonic Lodge. On January 7, 1968, the mission was constituted as Heritage Hills Baptist Church with 85 charter members. On January 12, 1969, the first worship service was held in the new sanctuary. A multi-purpose building was completed in 1977.

In 1986, after 10 months of study, prayer, and seeking God's will, Heritage Hills Baptist Church was relocated to Rockdale County, the present location. In 1995, the church dedicated its Sanctuary and Family Life Center, and in 2001 a state of the art Preschool/Children's Building. In 2003, Pastor Joe retired after faithfully serving for 36 years.

Today, with our pastor Fred Unger, Heritage Hills Baptist Church is blessed with 1116 members and continues in its mission "to know God and to make Him known."

OUR FUTURE.....Our Vision Statement: We exist to know God intimately and to reach out to those who need to develop a relationship with Him, by building a multi-generational, multi-cultural, church focused on:

  • Evangelizing our Community to the outer ends of the world,
  • Worshipping with the Gathered,
  • Fellowshipping with the Family of Faith,
  • Discipling the Followers, and
  • Equipping the Leaders for ministry and mission.

Jesus’ ministry included ministering to the Community (Evangelism), feeding the Gathered (Worship), gathering the Family of Faith (Fellowship), equipping the Followers (Discipleship), and challenging/sending out the Leaders (Ministry/Mission).

Jesus knew that the same approach does not work with all people. This is why we use the Circles of Commitment to illustrate our strategy while acknowledging that we minister to people at different levels of commitment. It takes time to build commitment, to develop quality, and to move people through the Circles of Commitment.
