In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Proverbs 3:6

The Prayer Ministry at Heritage Hills is the cornerstone for the various ministries and programs at our church. At Heritage Hills, prayer is not an option, but an essential part of daily living. We encourage Christians to seek the Lord in prayer above all else, and teach them to develop their own personal prayer lives.

Our weekly prayer times offer opportunities for people to learn to pray—as individuals or in small groups—and to engage in a purposeful life of prayer. In addition, our Prayer Room is open daily to individuals wishing to pray.

From The Prayer Team...

Have you really given any thought to your prayer life? Are you like most of us – we call on God in time of need. When I was asked to write this article, you know the second thing I did after saying “yes”? I prayed. Truth be known, I should have prayed FIRST. God’s Word tells us we should pray all the time, without ceasing. I have found myself praying at work, while driving around town, in the yard, and playing golf, (Not too much help with golf).

A few weeks ago, Bo and I played music at the Sunflower Festival, and I was a little nervous – too nervous to pray. But my good friend Beth took my, Bo, and Tammi’s hands and started praying. Once again, the Holy Spirit took over, everything worked out fine, and we were able to present the Gospel through music.

Do you have someone in your life who you can depend on to pray for you and with you? Most of us do, but if you don’t, I suggest you find a prayer partner. We have so much to pray for: our families, church, staff, work, country, friends, ourselves. Yes, ourselves. I pray to God for the ability to stand up for Him. I pray to God for the courage to witness for Him. I pray to God that, when I have that one opportunity to share my salvation with someone or someone asks me to, I use that opportunity wisely. I pray for His strength and guidance. It’s not so much how we say it, but that we are prayed up and allow the HOLY SPIRIT to speak through us.

In closing, I would like to pray for all of you. We have a great prayer ministry at HHBC, and my prayer is that someone will see this and come join us. God hears all of our prayers, so keep praying. Before I was able to wrap up this article, I had an accident which many of you know of or heard about: I almost lost my eye. This turned out to be quite an experience – but once again, I had a lot of people praying for me. I’m convinced without the power of prayer, things would not have gone as well as they did. Just another example of prayer. Thanks to everyone who was praying. Thank you Lord for all of these people. Let us all remember to pray for one another as a daily routine. May God bless you all.

All “Things” Great and Small

In the book All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot it highlights the challenges of a veterinarian working in Scotland and was the first of several books written by this author. This wonderful and humorous book highlights everyday happenings of the veterinarian as he treats both large and small animals. James Herriot followed it by a second book called All Things Bright and Beautiful.

The names and the content of these two books have caused me to think about prayer and that a book should be written called All Things Great and Small. We often think of prayer only when faced with a major issue or crisis, but prayer shouldn’t stop there – prayer is a form of communication with God and He wants us to bring every issue, every frustration and every need – He wants us to bring to him “all things great and small”.

You ask why should I bother God with the little things in life? Because He wants to be involved in EVERY aspect of our lives and is anxiously awaiting the opportunity to be asked. An answered prayer on a small item to me is just as exciting as an answer to a larger need and in fact the smaller item often can be a reminder how much God loves us and wants to be an active part of our daily lives. We shouldn’t hesitate – God tells us that we should come to Him in boldness (Hebrews 4:16). An exciting thing about prayer is that it can be done anytime – anywhere. On your way to work or standing in line at the store; working in the yard, sitting on the deck, or reading your e-mail. It doesn’t have to be formal or lengthy – it can be simple as one sentence – just like a child talking to his father and it can be about any need or issue you are facing (I have tried it and I know it works!).

So I challenge you to take “All Things Great and Small” to God. In Malachi 3, God challenges the Israelites in the area of giving and I think verse 10 can also apply to prayer when God says “Test me on this, says the Lord Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.” Want to have a closer relationship with God, then take to Him “all things great and small”. Our God – El Shaddai (All Sufficent One) is ready, willing and able. Then be ready to share with others.

Iron Sharpens Iron
“As iron sharpens iron,so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.”
 - Proverbs 27:17

Members of the prayer team have chosen to be involved in various prayer needs. However, prayer is an opportunity available to everyone, not just a few with a desire to be focused on the work and vision of HHBC.

You are encouraged to commit to praying on a regular schedule with a specific prayer focus. Praying with another person is a great blessing that you may look forward to sharing. You may pray in your home or in the beautiful prayer room at church. You are welcome whenever the church is open.

One specific need in any church family is to pray for the leadership. HHBC is blessed with a professional staff sharing many abilities and gifts dedicated to ministry that God is using to bless our church family. We realize that they are human and can become discouraged and tired of carrying the burdens alone. It is reported that each year great numbers of church ministry personnel leave ministry because they are tired and discouraged. Pray for wisdom to help carry the burdens. Come along side and help lift up one another. God will honor your prayer in wonderful ways.

“I urge, then, first of all that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”
- I Timothy 2: 1-4
